Water intake concerns

We are learning that five barges anchored in St. Rose on the Mississippi River have broken loose of their moorings, floated upriver and crashed into our water intake facility on the West Bank. The facility is located near Sugarhouse Road in Luling.

There was damage to the intake but at this time Waterworks is not malfunctioning and is still producing potable water for the parish. As soon as winds die down we will assess damage. We are in contact with the Coast Guard and the company that owns the barges to move them out of the way as soon as possible.

There is a possibility of more damage as the river levels drop, bringing the barges with it. We will keep you posted if anything changes.
