Storm surge on the West Bank

We are cautiously optimistic about the appearance of storm surge overnight and into tomorrow on the West Bank. Right now the Sunset Drainage District remains dry except for water over Bayou Gauche Road.

Winds are coming out of the south, and that is pushing water into marshland and lakes in St. Charles Parish. We won't know anything definite until tomorrow, but for right now, things continue to look promising.

The parish is prepared to do everything we can to fight any surges that may come in.

Water levels seem okay thus far (as of 9 pm). Sellers Canal at Pier 90 is at 1.87; for Rita it was 3.15. Lafitte is 2.8; for Rita it was 5.9. So far, so good.

You can check these yourself at
http://www2.mvr.usace.army.mil/WaterControl/new/layout.cfm

Under "Water levels by" choose NO District. Then sort by Barataria Basin.

The southern side of the Lock at Galliano reached as high as 7' earlier today. It's now at 4.4' so the water seems to be receding. But I think there's a high tide around midnight....

Anyway, I wanted to share. Let's hope the water continues to recede and we go home to face just some superficial wind damage; not water in homes!

BTW, I just want to say kudos to everyone at the EOC for all your hard work. The communication has been EXCELLENT! Thank you for using all of the high tech tools at your disposal!

Correcting the url in above post:

You'll have the delete the space before "n" in new; but otherwise the whole thing didn't come out....

As of 5 am 9/2 Pier 90 was at 2.71' and Lafitte was at 3.15'.... It came up some over night, but it would seem at these levels not enough to cause west bank flooding. I'M NO EXPERT FOLKS, I'M JUST BASING THIS ON COMPARISONS TO RITA. We'll have to wait on the EOC people to give us the final word... Again, I just wanted to share what appears to be good news for the west bank!!

Hey, M. Tracy...hope you and yours are safe!!! We're fine in Mobile.
